Mobile credit card processing has come a long way, with many changes still to come — and PayPal wants to make sure merchants stay ahead of the game.
The company announced this week that its mobile credit card processing system, PayPal Here, will soon include support for EMV (chip-and-pin) credit and debit cards. PayPal also announced that it will make the PayPal Here SDK available on Windows mobile devices.
Here's what we know so far about PayPal Here's upcoming changes and how they will affect your business.
EMV support
By October 2015, U.S. card issuers will be required to use EMV-based cards. EMV — the global standard Europay, MasterCard and Visa for credit and debit card transactions — eliminates the magnetic strips on cards and replaces them with chip-and-pin technology for better security. EMV cards are already widely used around the world, including in European countries.
What does this mean for small business owners? Merchants will now need to find and implement point-of-sale (POS) systems that support EMV-compliant credit and debit cards.
PayPal Here is helping retailers plan ahead for this upcoming requirement. The company has been working on its own EMV card reader, which launched in Europe back in 2013 as a mobile credit card processing system. Now, the same technology will soon be available in the U.S.
Unlike its credit card processing dongle that attaches to smartphones and tablets, PayPal Here's EMV reader is a large, handheld device. It works with the PayPal Here mobile app to read credit cards and process mobile payments. Additionally, PayPal says its new Here EMV reader will be capable of accepting forms of payment other than EMV.
Merchants that already have a PayPal Here account will receive the new EMV reader for free. Each additional reader will cost $15.
Windows support
PayPal also announced that the PayPal Here SDK will include Windows support beginning later this month. Previously only available for iOS and Android devices, PayPal Here for Windows now lets developers build upon the PayPal Here technology to make it work with the rest of the business's solutions and operations, such as inventory management systems, invoicing apps and customer relationship management.
PayPal Here for Windows will support devices running on Windows 8.1, including the Surface Pro 3 tablet and the Lumia 830 and Lumia 635 smartphones.
