While most people likely feel their jobs offer some level of pressure, a few positions are more stressful than others, new research finds.
The most stressful jobs are those in which employees are charged with protecting the lives of others, according to research from the job search site CareerCast. Specifically, firefighters, members of the military and police officers rank among the five most stressful jobs for 2015.
Protecting others isn't the only thing that results in a stressful job. The research shows that those whose work is often in plain view of the public eye, such as actors and journalists, also have highly stressful jobs.
The amount of stress employees experience can be predicted, in part, by looking at the typical demands and crises inherent in the job. CareerCast's ranking system for stress considered 11 different job demands that can be expected to evoke stress, including amount of travel, growth potential, deadlines, working in the public eye, competitiveness, physical demands, environmental conditions, hazards encountered, risk to one's own life, risk to the life of another and meeting the public.
A high score was awarded if a particular demand was a major part of the job; fewer points were awarded if the demand was a small part of the job, and no points were awarded if that demand was not normally required.
Based on site's rankings, the 10 most stressful jobs for 2015 and their median salaries are:
- Firefighter: $45,600
- Enlisted military personnel: $28,840
- Military general: $196,300
- Airline pilot: $98,410
- Police officer: $56,980
- Actor: $46,070
- Broadcaster: $60,070
- Event coordinator: $45,810
- Photojournalist: $42,530
- Newspaper reporter: $37,090
The research revealed that some positions are much less stressful than others. This is particularly true of jobs in which people work one on one with others, helping them in some way, and jobs in which workers set their own schedules.
This year's least stressful jobs and annual median salaries are:
- Hair stylist: $22,770
- Audiologist: $69,720
- University professor (tenured): $68,970
- Medical records technician: $34,160
- Jeweler: $35,350
- Medical laboratory technician: $47,820
- Seamstress/tailor: $25,590
- Dietician: $55,240
- Librarian: $55,370
- Forklift operator: $31,150
