Best Background Check Service for Very Small Businesses: GoodHire
Of all the services we reviewed, few were more forthcoming about their service packages and pricing than GoodHire. We liked that the specifics of each background check package the company offers and all of its pricing, which is very affordable, were readily available on its website. The company gives very small businesses the ability to purchase background checks one at a time and as needed. Additionally, its online system is extremely user-friendly. Best Do-It-Yourself Online Background Check Website: BackgroundReport.com
BackgroundReport.com is one of only a handful of background check websites that can be legally used for pre-employment screening. We especially like that the website is convenient to use, and also follows all of the Fair Credit Reporting Act requirements. The website involves job candidates in the background screening process — for example, it has them agree to the background check and gives them an opportunity to respond to any red flags that are uncovered. Best Background Check Service for Household Employees: eNannySource
eNannySource offers background checks that can be conducted on any household employee, not just nannies. We like that the company offers several levels of screening options and the ability to build your own packages. The service makes the background check process very easy by completely handling the candidate approval process and returning results via email. Our methodology
To determine the best background check services for both small businesses and very small businesses, we started by listing more than 50 of the vendors that conduct employee background checks. These included a combination of vendors we found via online searches and those we found through interviews with small businesses.
We then narrowed down that list by eliminating vendors that didn't specialize in background checks and those that didn't work specifically with small businesses. We ultimately settled on 12 services to consider as best picks: HireRight, GoodHire, Employment Screening Resources, Proforma Screening, Accurate Background, EBI Inc., InfoMart, Justifacts, Pre employ, Private Eyes, Employment Screening Services and Background Info USA. Next, we reviewed sample background check reports, read user comments and interviewed more business owners. We also contacted each company's customer service department and posed as would-be business owners. In all, we analyzed each service based on the following factors:
