If they can't have more money, most workers would appreciate a few more days off or better health care, new research finds.
More than 50 percent of employees say that other than additional compensation, the job perks they want most are more vacation days and a better benefit plan, such as enhanced health care, according to a study from the staffing firm Accountemps.
The good news is that employers recognize these are the perks their employees desire most. When asked what they think their employees would want most, besides a raise, 60 percent of the executives surveyed said either a better benefit plan or more time off.
While changing health care plans midstream is not an easy task, providing more time off is a bit more realistic for businesses to do, said Bill Driscoll, a district president with Accountemps.
"Changing a company's benefits package can be a lengthy, challenging and expensive process. Re-evaluating the vacation policy is fairly straightforward in comparison," Driscoll said in a statement. "Offering additional vacation time shows employees you're committed to helping them achieve greater work-life balance."
In addition, providing employees with some more time off gives them greater opportunities to relax and recharge, so they can return with renewed energy, Driscoll said. This can be good for your business, he said.
"You can't underestimate the importance of time away from work," Driscoll said. "Managers can set a good example by taking time off themselves and not checking in when they're on vacation."
Employees also said they crave other perks this year, including more scheduling flexibility, such as telecommuting or flexible work hours; more training or professional development opportunities; on-site meals; health and wellness options; and subsidized transportation.
The study was based on surveys of more than 2,100 chief executive officers from a stratified random sample of companies in more than 20 of the largest U.S. metropolitan areas and more than 320 employees who work in office environments.
