Samsung's Galaxy Note Edge is a top-tier business phone with a one-of-a-kind curved display. As its name implies, the Note Edge's display curves just at the edge, so the screen actually wraps around onto the side of the phone. It's a bit gimmicky, but the bent edge actually has some practical advantages. For instance, it gives you quick access to alerts and frequently used apps. Otherwise, the Galaxy Note Edge is practically identical to the new Galaxy Note 4, right down to the included S Pen stylus.
The Note Edge is coming to AT&T on Nov. 14, but it's not cheap — it will cost you a lofty $399 when you sign a two-year contract. That's $100 more than the Note 4. Other carriers are expected to announce release details soon. We'll have a full review up as soon as we get our hands on the Galaxy Note Edge. In the meantime, read on for three features that make it good for work.
Edge control
The Note Edge's wrap-around display looks a bit strange, but it enables a few features that the standard Galaxy Note 4 lacks. The sloped portion of the screen is essentially an always-on secondary screen, which functions independently of the main display. By default, it serves as a quick launch dock for your most-used apps, but that's not all. It can run all sorts of widgets that let you flip through news, stock updates, tweets and notifications with a swipe of your finger. And inside certain apps, it can give you quick access to menu items that would be hidden on other phones. It can even act as an alarm clock, displaying the current time on the edge, so you can easily see it from bed.
Note features
But gimmicks can only get a smartphone so far. What really makes the Galaxy Note Edge such a great business phone are the features that it inherits from the standard Galaxy Note 4. The Note Edge packs the same killer specs, including a blazing-fast processor and a huge, sharp, 5.6-inch display that's only a hair smaller than the Note 4's 5.7-inch screen. It also includes a stylus; just pull the pen from its slot on the bottom of the device to turn your smartphone into a note-taking machine. In addition, the Multi Window feature lets you run two apps at once in a split-screen view, so multitasking is easy. Most smartphones only let you view one app at a time.
Samsung security
The Note Edge includes a couple of great security features that help make it a top-tier work phone. For example, the fingerprint scanner embedded in the home button lets you quickly lock and unlock your device by sliding your finger over the button. The phone is also compatible with Knox, a security suite developed by Samsung that lets you run apps under a secure profile, so other apps can't access sensitive business data.
