AT&T and Samsung announced today (Sept. 22) that the new Samsung Galaxy Alpha will be available on Sept. 26 exclusively from AT&T online at att.com and at AT&T stores. Unveiled earlier this summer, the Galaxy Alpha is a powerful yet sophisticated smartphone for your business.
Design
The Samsung Galaxy Alpha is considered to be one of Samsung's most elegant and best-designed phones. First, it ditches the Galaxy S5's all-plastic casing and takes note from its competitors instead. Like the iPhone, the Galaxy Alpha features sleek, beveled, metal edges, which LAPTOP reports makes the device feel more "solid without weighing it down."
Despite its genuine metal frame, the Galaxy Alpha is thin and light, weighing just over 4 ounces and measuring 5.21 x 2.58 x 0.26 (HWD) inches. The device also comes with a 4.7-inch, 720p HD Super AMOLED screen. Whether you're working on documents in or out of the office or videoconferencing on the go, this gives you a crystal-clear display.
Performance
Powered by Android 4.4 KitKat, the Samsung Galaxy Alpha comes with all the business features offered by the rest of the Galaxy line. These include the time-saving Multi Window tool, which lets you easily multitask by splitting the screen to open and work on two apps simultaneously, and the 12-MP camera, which delivers stunning 4608 x 2592-resolution photos for your online store, social media posts and more.
The Galaxy Alpha also has business users covered when it comes to security. The device ships with Knox Workspace, an enterprise security tool that allows you to keep and run sensitive data and files under a secure layer that is separate from the rest of your phone. A PayPal-certified fingerprint scanner is also located on the home screen, so you can unlock your phone and perform other security functions using your fingertips instead of passwords or PINs, which are easily stolen.
The device runs on a fast 2.5-GHz quad-core processor and comes with 32GB of storage and 2GB of RAM. It doesn't come with a microSD Card slot, however.
Battery
One question about the Samsung Galaxy Alpha is whether its battery can keep up with your workday. Samsung has yet to reveal how much talk or Internet browsing time the smartphone packs, but it is equipped with a 1,860-mAh battery — compare this with the Galaxy S5's 2,800-mAh battery and the iPhone 6 Plus's 2,915-mAh battery, both of which deliver around 10 hours of battery life.
If this worries you, the Samsung Galaxy Alpha does offer a fix. It features an Ultra Power Saving Mode, which can keep your phone going for up to 24 hours once it reaches 10 percent charge. The Ultra Power Saving Mode does this by turning off unnecessary apps, ending background processes and turning the display black and white.
Cost and availability
The Samsung Galaxy Alpha comes in three colors to fit your style — Charcoal Black, Sleek Silver and Frosted Gold. It will cost $199.99 with a two-year contract. Without a contract, the Samsung Galaxy Alpha will set you back $612.99 outright, $25.55 per month on AT&T Next18 or $30.65 per month on AT&T Next12.
